One Puritan ideal that continues into today's society is the value of education. The Puritans were very religious and believed to have a strong connection with godGod. They valued education so much because they wanted everyone to be able to read the bibleBible. Being able to read and write was very important in their society. The Puritans were extremely religious so the bibleBible was very sacred and is the book of their religion, so being able to interpret it was needed. Education also helps to be more aware of your surroundings and generally behave better. If you committed a sin or looked bad in the eyes of godGod, you were punished, so getting this education helped. Since education was so greatly valued in this time it hinders this value to today's society and helped to establish the strong American school system that we have today. The US has some of the best schools and education systems in the world.
One Puritan ideal in which lead to the downfall of the envisioned Utopia was Moral Earnestness. Moral Earnestness is to findfinding anyone who has different religious beliefs and/or practices than you is seen as immoralimmoral. It's in the sense that your religion is more superior or the “greater” than the other. The Puritan lifestyleslifestyle's key component is religion. The Puritans left England because they were oppressed for practicing their religion there which is essentially what the Puritans did to those who weren't the same as them once they came to the Americas. This is one thing that our current society does well because of the first amendment which grants us the right to practice any religion we choose. To have a “perfect society” you need one in which everyone respects everyone regardless of background, race, sex, religion, etc. Since this was not the case, the Puritans failed to create a Utopia.
