“Men have found gold in the aArctic and they wanted dogs.; Nnot any kind of dogs, but strong dognes that were able to carry sleds through the freezing cold.” Buck, the dog, lived in Santa Clara Valley in a giant house. The name of the house where he lived at was called Judge Miller’s pPlace. The house was a beautiful and large house that was, surrounded by porches and a long driveway. The houseIt had giant lawns, amazing stables, grape arbors, bright green pastures, orchards, and giant berry patches. There was also a big cement tank where the Judge Miller’s boys would take their morning swim, and were kept cool in the hot afternoon. Buck the dDog would swim and hunt with the Judge Miller's sons and went on long walks with the Jjudge’s daughters, Alice and Mollie. Buck’s father was a St. Bernard named Elmo. Elmo was the Jjudge’s favorite. Buck apparently was not so big, but still weighed 140 pounds.
“In 1897
, in Klondike, the gold dragged men from all over the world into the ice cold., Bbut Buck did not read the newspapers.; Hhe did not know that men’s hearts could be turned with greed. Manuel, one of the gardener’s helpers, was such a man whose heart had turned, and his greedy eyes had fallen on Buck-a perfect sled dog.” The Jjudge was out one night and Manuel had an idea, since the judge was gone. His plan was to grab Buck and take him through the orchard. Buck was lead to a train station where one man saw Manuel take Buck. That man was a man that was partners with Manuel. Manuel took the dog, gave it to the man, and the man handed Manuel the money. Manuel put a piece of rope around Buck’s neck and tied it, but Buck did not resist and; he thought he learned to trust men he knew. When Manuel finished tying the rope, ithe rope was handed to thea stranger, and Buck started to growl. Little did Buck know, the man pulled tighter on the rope, choking Buck, shutting off his breath. Never in his life had Buck been treated so harshly. After all, he was a king at Judge Miller’s place.
