Longitudinal grooves in individual scales channel the volume of water into a more smaller space, thus speeding up the water near the surface of the shark, and resulting in less contact time for unwanted organisms. The scales theirmselves, in perpetual motion in response to changing pressure, fail to produce a stable surface for organisms or microbes to adhere to.
