UpbBringing up kids looks more like a drug addiction: when kids do things wrong, adults punish their children, make them feel ashamed and scared. On the other hand, adults approve "right" behavior and reward children when kids satisfy their expectations.
For that reason, we kind of get "hooked" on people's opinion – we do everything to relieve that devastating and painful "emotional withdrawal" of shame and get "high" on others' approval.
Shame is a very strong emotion. In small doses
, it can be useful and motivate. But when shame goes out of control, it becomes extremely destructive for an individual, and the world in general.
Most of the global problems we face nowadays are the result of that destructive feeling which breaks our pride, will, and makes us do ridiculous, embarrassing, self-destructive, or even cruel things we would never do.
Ecological crisis and
"consumering":
For example, one of those behavioral addictions is mindless
"consumering": people buy and collect very expensive, but most of the time useless for them things like a collection of cars, tons of clothes, gadgets, and so on.
Indeed, that's very profitable for different companies who make a lot of money
fronm that vehavior. But they also destroy huge amounts of natural resources,: land, and biological species that are essential for humankind.
The result of that "drug dealing" is that ecological problems are getting worse day by day
, which increases our chances of becoming insextinct soon enough.
Radicalism:
As our upbringing reminds
us of drug addiction, it's very easy to replace one type of values onwith another by appreciating any type of behavior. People who lack of friends, close ones, or good life opportunities will do everything to get that euphoric feeling of approval and love from others.
That's how cults work: first they break people's will completely by hellishly humiliating them. Then, they dope people with love so they start "chasing high" by doing everything cult leaders want them to do - the emotional attachment is so strong that cultists can even kill themselves if their master
so orders that.
And as any type of a drug, "emotional dope" takes away their soul, their curve for approval and love gets bigger and bigger, so
that the more they do that – the more it's difficult for them to quit.
Drug abuse:
Very often, to relieve shame and fear
, people start abusing substances, which make their situation way worse, because they also develop physical addiction to drugs, which is incredibly hard to fight.
Even though drugs are devastating, they are not the main problem. In fact, nowadays it's possible to get rid of physical addiction relatively eas
ily. But there is always something which feeds the addiction. Not the bad life experience itself, but brain chemicals which are triggered by that experience triggered.
Plenty of people who suffer from drug addiction openly say that their emotional baggage stops them from getting clean or makes them relapse.
