Billy Elliot is a great movie about the journey of an 11 -year -old boy, Billy Elliot, who overcomes the social prejudice to achieve his dream as a ballet dancer. Billy Elliot’s mother has died and he lives with his grandmother, his father, Jackie, and his older brother, Tony; both are the miners in a coal mining town in Northern England coal mining town. Bill’s father sends him to the boxing lessons, but he is not interested in boxing, but the ballet lesson next door catches his attention and this is the point where Billy starts his dancing dream. Billy joins the ballet class taught by Mrs. Wilkinson with the girls instead of practicing boxing. Jackie discovers Billy is taking ballet classes and he gets very angry because he thinks ballet is for girls and as a boy, Billy has to do something more masculine. Billy argues with his dad and goes to Mrs. Wilkinson’s house. After kfinowding out what happensed to Billy, Mrs. Wilkinson encourages him to join the Royal Ballet School because she knows he has talent and wants to teach him for the next ballet audition. However, Billy misses the audition when his brother igoes into jail because of hisa fight with the police. Mrs. Wilkinson is furious but she does not give up on Bill,. iInstead she talks with his family about his potential and how the family should support him for what he is talented at.

One day, Jackie sees Billy is dancing with Michael, his gay friend, and is very surprised about Bill. From that day on, he changes his mind and wants to help Bill to attend the audition in London. To do that, they need a lot of money and Jackie attempts to be thea strikebreaker but Tony stops him. Thus, by selling his wife’s jewelriesy and with the money raised by his fellow miners and the others, Jackie takes Billy to London for the audition. Both Jackie and Billy are nervous at the audition after Billy’s performance, and unfortunately Billy punches his friend and is told off for what he has done. They come home disappointedly; however, they later garet a surprised when a letter arrives from the school saying that Billy gethas been accepted. Billy leaves the housme for London and years later, he becomes thea main professional ballet dancer and his family and friend attend his first performance in London.

The movie illustrates the gender role stereotypes and social beliefs that a feminine spoart such as ballet is just for girls or gay boys, and it is also an excellent example that one can make his or her dream come true if they does not give up while being challenged by social expectations. Billy succeeds and changes the way how his family thinks about ballet and he eventually gets support from the family as well as from his community. The movie also delivers the message to everyone and the whole society as a whole that male dancers are masculine men and we all should be more open regarding gender roles. In addition, we live in a modern culture and the societal norms should not be thea challenge against one’s dream and passion.
