¬¬¬InIn Torres Saillant’s article in New York Dominican Writers, the number of political writers and the number of female writers call for my attention. I was aware of Dominican presence in the United States in the latter half of the nineteenth century .(¬¬¬Torres-Saillant 148). Dominican writers comecame to the United States in the first place because theof their parents’ desire to be expose their children to “American spirit”the 'American spirit' or it was it to escape Trujillo’s violent regime (¬¬¬Torres-Saillantregime? (Torres-Saillant 147). To Dominican Republic, United States was considered freedomfree and richesrich. For example, in Pedro Henriquez Urena’s poems about living in New York, he writes how having the ability to take vacations back to the Dominican Republic in the summer, showshows class privilege. (¬¬¬Torres-Saillant(Torres-Saillant 147). In addition, because of Trujillo’s regime of restricted freedom of speech to the people of the country, United States’ pride of Freedomin freedom of speech, was desired. Torres Saillant writes about the different ways Dominican writers wrote their perspective of life in the Dominican Republic and in New York, and how that helped them make a name for themselves in Contemporary American Literature.
