Each year, in New South Wales alone, thousands of greyhounds are tragically injured or murdered due to their inability to race. The greyhound racing industry is incredibly corrupt, covering up how many dogs are killed yearly, how many are born yearly, and other figures, such as financial information, etc. Furthermore, it’s been reported that these industries take part in money laundering which further proves that this industry is flawed beyond belief. I contentcontend that this horrifyingly corrupted industry is an excuse for animal cruelty and needs to be shut down immediately.
An average greyhound has thea life expectancy of 12 years, but in the racing industry, these greyhounds aren’t expected to live past the age of 4.5 years old, and if they’re not one of the lucky 5.5% of greyhounds that get rehomed, they’re euthanised. The immense trauma they undergo while racing is sickening. AnimalsThe animals aren’t always subjected to proper veterinary treatment, but rather subjected to the cheapest possible ‘treatment’ for the animals. For instance, a vet recommended the safe removal of a greyhound’s tail, under surgery, but the owner took it upon himself to rip the tail off the greyhound, and, dump it behind a dumpster. A dog’s tail is incredibly sensitive, and isit's crucial for their balance, to. To subject an animal to that unimaginable pain and life damaging ‘treatment’ is sickening. Brenton Scott, the Chief Executive for the New South Wales Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers associationAssociation justified these heinous actions by stating that they ”make a $335 million contribution” of which, $176.9 million was paid out in wages annually, which makes a significant “contribution to the social fabric of many communities” according to Mr Scott.
