When exploring human evolution through the lens of urban advancement, the vital role of art and culture is undeniable—asundeniable, for example, when empires such as Rome and Babylon used arts as their blueprint to buildturn their visions of urban idealism tointo reality and their cultures to sustain those achievements. But we live now in a period of divergence, when art and culture are increasingly overlooked by urban planners and developers and ensuring urban sustainability requires alternative strategies for meeting this intrinsic human need. This thesis explores the influence of art and culture on modern-day urban development using limited network theory as its investigative methodology, with each variable existing within ever-changing networks. Such an approach offers far-reaching insights into how developers and local governments alike can embed art and culture within urban planning, by engaging the various entities involved in the process of urban development and regeneration. This will lead urban cultures to a virtuous cycle of sustainable development and become an effective and sustainable way for people to improve their quality of life.
