In “New Report: Most College Students Agree that Campus Free Speech is Waning” published in Forbes Magazine, former professor Tom Lindsay explains the debate on free speech spoken on campus. A huge portion of college students fear of speaking honestly on campus due to possibly offending others. Several surveys given throughout campus show the division of students for free speech versus inclusion. While just over half of surveyed students honor the first amendment of protecting the freedom of speech, other students claim that inclusion is most important on campus. As observed throughout this debate, Tom Lindsay stresses how possible “demographic factors such as race, sex, political party, religion, sexual orientation” can effect answers submitted by students in the serveysurvey (Lindsay). Each category differs in opinion based on personal experience. For example, those of different races who may be targeted with “hate speech” believe inclusion is more important than free speech. Others claim not obtaining freedom of speech becomes alarming.
An overpowering ratio of college students claim that students on campus today are being stripped from freedom of speech and fearful of speaking their mind freely due to possible offensive comments. Students are trying to move towards aan environment where opinions and beliefs are looked upon only by yourself and therefore, beliefs are amplified, and comments or freedom of speech is not enforced.
