Over this semester, I have learned and developed a deeper understanding through all the discussion wewe've had, the book, small groups break out, andouts; all about leadleading to the diversity and social justice, the oppressed, and the dominant groups,; how to have a better conversation about race and racism among black and white,; how to provide space and help educate people who are afraid to have difficult conservations,conversations and fully understand that racism is in American and there’s more work to be done. My first key learning moment in this course was when we had to read Promoting Diversity and Social Justice and discussdiscussed it in class. Through our discussions, Kate had asked the question, “How can white people unpack their backpack, of privilege”.privilege?” Kate’s question was an aha moment for me because not a lot of timethere have not been many times when we have discussions like these arewhen white people are willing to have questions that will help them or the whole groups getgets uncomfortable about the topic. When this question was asked, I literally, had a voice in my head “I bet not everyone is going to be uncomfortable to give a point for this question.”, I thought it was going to to be challenging for most people,. I also made this assumption because at my previous job, discussiondiscussions like these had us put into two bridge-builder groups, and it was always difficult for some “white “white people to share, since this was their first time having conversations about racism with a group of black people.
