In the novel Neverwhere written by Niel Gaiman, the main character
, Richard, is the hero. This is shown when Richard and Door are both approached by Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar in the British Museum and he says, "If you want to hurt her, you'll have to kill me first." (195 Niel). When Richard stands up for Door, when they encounter the men who killed her family, it shows how he would sacrifice himself for his friend. This is a heroic actionact because it is selfless and noble. At thethat moment, he was not thinking about himself but anotherabout another human being and how his actions could change their life. Another example of Richard being a hero is when he wentgoes through the last part of the ordeal to get the key for Door. He shows selflessness because during the ordeal he couldhas to listen to the voices telling him to kill himself and not pass the ordeal, but, he has faith and courage to continue on and not give up. Richard shows that he is strong and noble because he completes the ordeal for Door and not for himself. Lastly, Richard shows his heroicnessheroism when he kills the beast for Door's bodyguard, Hunter. At first, Richard is hesitant and unsure, but, then realizedrealizes he hadhas to be brave and slay the beast. This act is heroic because he killed the beast so he couldto save Door for Mr. Croup and Mr. Vendemar. Thus, Richard is the hero of Neverwhere because he wasis selfless, kind, caring, and noble.
