Many people argue about whether physical education lessons should be reduced in favor of other subjects that are considered more important, such as math, history, or natural sciences. I strongly believe that this is not a beneficial proposal.
In the first place, the purpose of physical education lessons is not just to give students some time to have fun and play with their classmates, but more importantly to raise awareness of physical health and teach students how to take care of their bodies. Given that there are more and more fast-food restaurants every year, the problem of obesity is increasing all over Europe. This might lead in the future to society-wide problems and a lot of new civilization diseases. There is also the possibility that average life expectancy will be shortened if we do not do something about it. One of the solutions to this problem is proper physical education in schools.
For the second, young people nowadays spend a lot of their free time playing computer games or using smartphones, which can also lead to health problems in the future. Physical education is a way to force young people to spend their time actively. Reducing PE lessons, for example, from 4 hours a week to 2 hours a week, could have terrible consequences. It's a no-brainer that a daily ten-minute walk is vastly beneficial to health, but for some students, PE class is the only time for exercise.
All things considered, I strongly disagree with the proposal to reduce physical education classes, as it could cause a lot of problems in the future. I would also recommend the opposite – to increase the PE hours in school.
