I had a great experience during my two weeks observing at Dr. Lee's dental office in Colleyville, Texas, back in December, 2020. I conducted my observation while shadowing Mrs. Rayna, a dental hygienist. First, she would haveask her patients to use mouthwash. Then, she started withby scaling the bottom teeth on the exterior and then the anteriorinterior. She proceeded to clean the right side of the mouth, carefully going between each tooth, and afterward asking the patient to rinse with water to remove any stains. Next, she flossed the patient's teeth individually with string floss. Using a tool like a ring to hold the polish in place, Mrs. Rayna used a small electric toothbrush to rub the polish on each tooth and then rinsed the patient's mouth with water. After that, Dr. Lee stepped in to double-check on the patient. He looked at the patient's x-rays, examined the teeth, and looked under the tongue for any cancer tissue (white stuffpatches underneath the tongue) contained in the gums, jaw, andand/or lymphatic nodes. Dr. Lee told me that sometimes the cause of teeth having a dent is from the force use ofused when flossing or when using a toothpick to floss between the teeth. Additionally, he explained that sugary drinks dissolve into acids that stay on your gums. If not removed, they will damage your gums. If the gums are damaged, the bones that support your teeth will diminish in size and cause tooth loss in the long run. Also, Dr. Lee gave me some advice on patient relationships. He told me to get to know them, make them feel comfortable by having a conversation, and ask them questions like, "What school did you attend?" or "What do you do for a living?" You may have things in common with them. Lastly, remember to be nice to patients and make them feel at ease.
