Because carefully edited feeds can act as a smoke screen, concealing serious issues behind the appearance of perfection and making it more challenging for parents or friends to recognize that they need help, teenagers who have created idealized online personas may feel frustrated and depressed at the disconnect between who they pretend to be online and who they truly are. Also, the perfection of others that they displayis displayed on their social media profiles can feed their self-doubt. Children who are self-conscious interpret their peers' behaviors as evidence of what they believe they lack.
