Research question: Why are Black/ African American adults less likely to access mental health services and what effect does not utilizing mental health resources have on their current well- being/mental healthwellbeing/mental health? The Black communitycommunity generally does not use the mental healthcare system and it is affecting their current well-beingwellbeing. This topic serves as significant because researchers report, that Black African Americans (B/AA) are less likely to seek adequate mental attention from mental health professionals such as Social Workerssocial workers, Therapisttherapists and Mental Health Workersmental health workers. B/AAB/AAs repress their feelings, emotions and trauma (Logan, 2018). B/AA self seekB/AAs suffer their problems causing them to sufferemotional and mental health problems in silence (Logan, 2018). B/AAB/AAs suffer from a number of risk factors in America, such as: poverty, institutional racism, crime and not having properimproper education abouton signs of mental health signsillness and affectsthe effect that unresolved diagnosis havehas on an individual (Thomas and Alberty,2013). This research paper will focus on the generational stigmas and fears B/AAB/AAs have reaching out to mental health care professionals, the cultural differences between the mental health care providers and B/AA, the effect self-seeking help havehas on individuals and the role religion plays in the B/AA community. Two articles that are going to further assist with evidence are, Mental Health Treatment Seeking amongAmong Older Adults with Depression: The impact of Stigma and Race written by Kyaien Connor and Deep Dark Suffering in Silence: Mental Health Services Stigma amongAmong African American Men writtenMen by Amel Logan. I will also be analyzing the film Deep, dark secret: A closer look at the mental illness in the African American Communitycommunity (Thomas and Alberty,2013). I am fully aware that I cannot interview or include in my study the vulnerable populationpopulations in my study such as: Womenwomen who are pregnant/babiespregnant, prisoners, children and people who are suicidal and cannot make conscience decisions for themselves, as I would need IRB permission.
